When starting a small project, many people are not aware of their options as far as purchasing the actual stone goes. For larger jobs such as a kitchen, most of the time the customer will be purchasing a full slab, and paying for the amount of square feet they use from that stone. However, the full slab still needs to be purchased by the distributor or fabricator, and that is what contributes to the square foot cost.
Smaller jobs do not require full slab, which is where remnants come into play. A remnant is the remaining piece or pieces left over from larger slabs. These pieces can range from the size of half a slab (if someone doing a larger job needed to cut into a second slab only for a small portion to finish their job) to the size of a small table top or vanity.
It’s definitely worth a spin around the remnant yard before starting your project – they are generally priced all the same, at a low cost, regardless of the level. (You can get a high level piece for the same price as a level one stone!) Here are some ideas for remnants:
